How to make it:
Spread the avacados on one side of the bagel
next, spread the cream cheese and spread it on the other half
take one slice of a tomato and place it on the cream cheese
take one slice of chedder cheese and place it on the tomato
put that side of the bagel in the oven on broil until the cheese melts, or put in toaster oven.

take it out when the cheese melts and put both sides of the bagel together for the bagely surprise

What happened to Haiti’s forest? Why is it important that we learn about the fall of Haiti’s forest? What can this tell us about ourselves? I believe the lack of environmental regulations and the reliance on unsustainable harvested biomass energy can and will be lead to desolate future for Haiti and add to the climatic changes the worlds’ future. The government only protects 4% of the land, allowing anybody to tear down the forest. Destructing the rain forest and not having any regulations for it, is a problem not just for local habitat but also for global climate. A trees’ mass is about 50% carbon and taking away a carbon sink, inevitably creating a build up of CO2 in the atmosphere leading to climate change. Forestry Management is necessary to Haiti , because in a location so vulnerable to hurricanes and earthquakes, trees provide other ecosystem services such as mitigation of floods and erosion. Over the years, natural disasters have affected the people more and more. Cities have become desolate and uninhabitable. All of the tree loss and desolation has lead to the destruction of the rain forests’ Ecosystem Services. Everybody is destroying the land and soon, they will run out of land to destroy. If every country worked together, we could save ourselves.

Food Inc.

What struck me the most about this movie had to have been the mass production of food , the access to unhealthy food, and obstacles to obtaining healthy food. Kevins law was an example of this to me, after the disgusting production of meats killed a child, and nothing was done about it, it opened my eyes to how much the food industry doesn’t care about me. If they don’t take action from a childs death, what makes my life any more important? The fast food joints won’t be there to pay my medical bills nor wait for me at my bedside if I am stricken with E.Coli. Another thing that made me re consider my food choices was the lady that worked for Tyson. After working with those chickens, her body became allergic to all antibiotics. Being allergic to 3 common antibiotics myself I know how hard it is to find medicine that works when you have an infection, it made me wonder if my parents eating habits effected my allergies. Is that even possible? The methods of killing and raising the animals was too sad for me to comprehend. Its almost like they slowly die anyways, taking away there rights to life. I just don’t understand how anybody could stomach that.

Many people believe that the state Haiti is in, can solely happen to that one small third of an island. Others believe Haiti can never get worse, and that it is unlikely for an end of the country to come. But Haiti wasn’t always so horribly destroyed. In fact if you look at the Dominican Republic, it is covered in forest, this gives us an estimate on how Haiti should look. Why is it important that we learn about the fall of Haiti’s forest? What can this tell us about ourselves? I believe the lack of environmental regulations and the reliance on unsustainably harvested biomass energy can and will be lead to desolate future for Haiti and add to the climatic changes of our future.

Three. Known as a magic number, but it is magical no more. 3 is the percentage amount of rainforest left in the nation of Haiti.[i] The total land area of Haiti is only 2,756,000 hectares and surprisingly the government only protects 4% of the land, allowing whoever wants to tear down the forest. This is a problem to the environment not only because a trees mass is about 50% carbon and it would be taking away a possible carbon sink, and turning it into a source, inevitably adding to climate change, [ii], but also because wood and charcoal are Haiti’s most vital resources because it is such a small island with limited resources. The Haitian governments’ policies that are put in place only deal with regulations and taxes. They don’t enable any types of incentives or provide resources to help change over cutting[iii]. Could the Haitian government be doing more to protect their rainforest on such an island?

Forestry is vital to Haiti, because in a location so vulnerable to hurricanes and earthquakes, Trees prevent landslides. A recent National Geographic news article stated:

“As Haiti's trees have disappeared, landslides have become a major concern, especially during the rainy season, and the destabilizing effects of an earthquake on soil only worsen the problem.”[iv]

Rain Forests are like the earth’s umbrellas. They protect the earth against harsh rains and winds. Rainforest trees also naturally have deep roots to help keep them intact.[v] The problem with trees being cut down, is not only the loss of CO2 absorption, but it is also the after storm effects. If we cut down trees, the earth is no longer capable of absorbing the water when it rains. This is because when there are no trees, and it rains, the top soil washes away with the water. [vi]

The topsoil is the most vital portion of the soil because it contains the most nutrients, microorganisms, and other things that help in planting. If the top soil is all gone, no trees will grow. I pulled a general example of how lack of trees effects soil:

“Studies in the Ivory Coast found that forested slopes lost 0.03 tonnes of soil per year per hectare, whereas bare slopes lost 138 tonnes per hectare”[vii]

This fact was shocking because you can see the dramatic differences a rain forest can go through without trees. Thus causing more complications with the effects of weather. Over the years natural disasters have affected the people more and more. Cities are already desolate and uninhabitable.[viii]

The Ecosystem Services in the rain forest are very important to the surrounding lands. Known as “Fresh Water Regulators” it isn’t only water they regulate. The rainforest contains over half of the world’s animals and plants, and even with this fact, and estimated 1% is all that has been discovered so far. The Biodiversity is important to the rainforest. You know some of the food we get here in America originated in the rain forest? Chocolate, Rice, fruits, yams, nuts, spices, coffee ,and potatoes are just to name a few. Without such biodiversity we would not be able to enjoy the sweet taste of a freshly brewed coffee. Think about that the next time you go to Starbucks.

While some people are destroying trees, others are destroying them and replacing large amounts of them with one particular plant, coffee is a good example. Because of the mass amount of demand on coffee, the problems with the over populated un natural amounts of coffee in one area. Can be drastic such as, what happens if a coffee eating bug infests the area? There would be no more tree population. When a clearing is made for coffee trees, it contributes to the extinction of an estimated 50,000 plant, animal, and insect extinction.[ix] Also, if we lose diversity in plants we lose diversity in our diets. Don’t you enjoy your variety?

Many answers we need about Haiti can be concluded by looking at the boarding country. Back in 1999 the Dominican Republics’ government enforced a new forest law. The law calls for adopting

“…regulations creating special incentives to promote the valuation of the environmental services of forests, including carbon fixation…”[x]

It is apparent that the Dominican Republic, although not perfect, is better off because their government takes control.

The Government problems in Haiti began back in 1957 when Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier and his son, Jean-Claude "Baby Doc." Were the dictators. [xi] The didn’t establish clear laws on land laws

With all of the CO2 that is emitted, I wondered "Shouldn't the trees be taking it in?" but after reading more on Deforestation the fact of the matter is, 25-30 percent of our green house gas emissions is because of deforestation. Not only are the trees cut down another loss to a CO2 sink, but in the process of them being cut down they release 1.6 billion tonnes of CO2 because they are made up of 50% carbon.

Although the movie we watched was a bit confusing and "sciencey" the main point I got from it was about the many choices we have for energy, what we are doing now, and what progress we are making.

Nate explained how accessible fossil fuels were to our society and how affordable they are. But the problem sets in the future, and the effects we will see in it. I like how he left the conclusion of his demonstration to the viewers. And he gave both sides of the issue perspective.

He discussed a lot of the renewable resources, but I didn't like how he only talked about them for a little and he didn't hit on enough Pros with them. His explanation on the solar paint was pretty new for me, I never thought science could evolve to that.

After the movie I wanted to know what he thought we could do about the prices of going green. He listed the price differences with energy but he never said what he suggested we could do about it

Beginning with the research about Food and why Organic Food is good for us, I wanted to look into how food is being promoted right now and what we can do to better our communities eating habits. Something i found shocking was a new restaurant opened in Chandler Arizona. They promote eating un-healthy. They don't even serve lettuce at the least with there burgers, The heart attack grill is an exaggeration of what is promoted everyday to our food habits. with commercials from carls junior with girls rolling around in soapy water selling a messy burger, to burger king and Mcdonalds competing with each other. You never see a girl rolling around in a fresh field of organic strawberries, or a man dripping with sweat working hard in a garden to serve his family a fresh meal. Talking about organic food can be helpful, but getting to the core issue is where the good story is at. So i did a little more digging...

Financial Crisis
One of the major reasons people don't eat organically is because it cost more. I google'd "Why people dont eat organic" and the very first website to pop up was "17 tips for buying organic food on the cheap" But why are websites even here helping us eat healthy cheaper? Why is it so hard to find? My hypothesis is that it cost's to ship them around, as well as more manual labor because there arent pesticides helping the growth, people actually have to work more to make perfect growing conditions for the plants.

The opposing side
Running into this article made me think about some valid points. Yes, eating organically helps you and the environment but does it really? The article discusses the process in which an organic apple from california, is shipped to New York, and how much fuel was burned in that process? Causing more CO2 emissions, and contributing to the war based on oil. How can we make the process cheaper, and more "green" at the same time? People in some states are having a hard time getting locally grown Organics, this means we must spread the idea of making Gardens around the Nation. This was just a small thought.

Why go Organic?
I think if we inform people on why organic is the way to go, it might help with the cause. What are the effects in-organic food can have on you?

When you buy organic food you don't consume pesticides and the farm workers aren't exposed to it as well . Pesticides have been known to cause diarrhea to harming enzymes in your nervous system.

As I began my research on plants I wanted to plant spinach, unfortunately it only does well in cold weather. So I narrowed my choices to Watermelon, Sweet Corn, and Rosa Californica. My goals for Watermelons and Sweet corn might be a big ambiguous therefore I chose the Rosa Californica.

Like most girls and women, I am a fan of Roses. I never gave it any thought that roses grown in san diego aren't in there natural state. The Rosa Californica is interesting because it is one of the only 2 roses native to California. Along with being very pretty and pink, these flowers provide great hips for tea. Tea isn't the only thing you can consume from this plant, you can eat a fruit that grows from it, I am un-aware of the name but it is edible. This flower likes moisture, but like a lot of native San Diego plants it can adapt to a drought easily. This plant protects itself with its thick prickly thorns, which people can use outside of there houses to keep stray dogs and cats out of there yards.

The cool thing about this wild rose is "...(it) will grow in a wide range of soil types and will do quite well in heavy soils that are hard on some other native plants." Therefore all though The soil at our garden isnt the "best" soil, it is still suitable for the roses.

This flower is also a great provider for the Garden as a whole. It provides a home for the pollinators in the garden community as birds make there nest in them which i believe could be a symbiotic relationship. The bird lives there as the plant protects it with the thorns and the birds spread the pollen , and butterflies spread the pollen.

You dont have to worry about catching any nasty infections or rash's from this flower it is virtually disease free and pest . Another cute fact is they bloom in the summer. I can just imagine the summer sky reflecting from these beautiful flowers full of life.

Of all the interesting facts I found about this particular flower, this quote struck me the most, "Rosa californica thrives on neglect. Do not fertilize this rose. My experience has been that it blooms as the soil is drying out. Blooming/fruiting under stress is not uncommon for many plants. Try withholding the irrigation." I read a lot of reviews about people complaining how there roses never bloom, and I am really worried about planting them for that reason. But that quote makes sense to me because the rosa californica is a WILD rose, which in my eyes means that's like trying to take care of a wild tiger, it just does better on its own. This seems like a very easy plant to take care of and a refreshing way of looking at things with nature.

In this article it focused on the obesity issue. I thought the facts from the obesity data would back up my information about how available healthy food is for minorities. In the article it states that African American Adults have the highest obesity rates, and Hispanic women and children are basically just as high. Isn’t this ironic how the Hispanic and African American Children are the ones living in the ghettos of America not able to get healthy food for cheap even though sometimes there the ones planting and harvesting them.

They also bring up the topic of changing laws to promote healthy living, they want “penalties and incentives to promote healthier foods and exercise.” Which I think would work out great. I think that is valid because I am not overweight, so why should I exercise and eat healthy if I’m not fat yet? I need an incentive to help the environment which could be beneficial for the economy who knows the outcome.

In the article above they are talking about the dilemma with poor countries being against bio-fuels because it would raise the price of food. Although switching to bio-fuels may cost more, it could create more jobs for people around the world. And even if we weren’t to switch to biofuels, if everybody had a hybrid or electric car, it could help the environment. The thing about poor countries is they are distributing whatever they can grow, to other countries for money. I believe the world can feed the hungry and resolve the environment crisis all at once. If each country simply provided for itself the food sources would be plentiful. Some countries are located in horrible conditions for growing plants, but there are always other resources within a living space for food. Humans have been able to adapt for millions of years. Everybody would be ok.

The thing I enjoy the most about this article was all of the pro’s of going to local places for food. These can help with my information on incentives. The article mentions how it can help the economy, prevent global warming, and it tastes better. But I want there to be commercials like the cigarettes and the Truth Commercials. If the truth campaign was effective I wonder how effective one for eating habits can be and what dramatic changes this can have on America.

In the discussion on Friday I was most interested in the junk food discussion. I really think any food can be junk food, so when people were saying we should ban junk food, that may wipe out everything. If you eat ice burg lettuce everyday with nothing else, that can actually harm your body because it has no nutritional value, so creating a diet system for America would be complex and difficult. It is very complicated trying to eat healthy because it is so unaffordable, nobody could think of a way to make it more affordable and this is why I want to learn more about it. I believe eventually we will get to the point where it can be affordable and i want to be apart of the generation that makes it happen.

Family Farmers

I have family that lives in Pennsylvania and Oklahoma that I know are into farming. My uncle Tommy grows all sorts of things in his huge yard. He also has fish in this river behind his house. He grows greens, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, all kinds of veggies. My family in Oklahoma used to raise animals and grow crops as well. My dad told me once my great grandmothers goat kicked her, so they ate it for dinner! My grandfather in oklahoma owned a raccoon. How much more farmy can you get? Oh yeah and of course i have hidden family history I might never get to the bottom of like which family members picked cotton and stuff, and my other grandmother that was Osage native american, im sure she had a lot of farming in her day.

The one thing I have always wondered about in the world of science was how chickens reproduce. How do the men fertilize the eggs? I just don't get how a chicken lays eggs and they need to be fertilized but there in a shell?

Another thing I am curious about is a bird. I forgot the name of it, but there is a species of bird at seaworld, and one is red while the other is white. But you could never tell them apart genetically. They are the exact same. I just don't see how this is possible. Not one genetic difference and they look completely different. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE!
